Fibromyalgia is extremely difficult to diagnose. Diagnosis though becomes easier once the causes of the disease are known, but in the case of fibromyalgia, even the causes are confused. Different researchers have different theories as to what causes this condition.
The most common causes of the condition are depression, trauma, overexertion, anxiety, lack of exercise, stress, humidity, and lack of sleep or sleep disturbances, infectious diseases and extremes of temperature. Yet none of these causes can be said to be solely responsible for this condition.
There have been a number of theoretical explanations given by different researchers as to why some of the said causes lead to the onset of the fibromyalgia. Some theorists feel that the abnormal functioning of the immune system may cause this problem. They also feel that certain toxic substances from lactic acid accumulate in the muscles to cause this condition.
Viral infections have also been blamed for the development of this disease in individuals. A number of scientist claim that the disease may also be caused due to food allergy from food products such as fermented foods, eggplant, dairy products, wheat and potatoes.
The deficiency of the chemical serotonin in the brain can also lead to fibromyalgia. Serotonin helps the brain cells transmit information to the rest of the nervous system. It has a significant function in the regulation of sleep, vomiting, mood, appetite and sexuality. The deficiency of this chemical can thus lead to problems such as depression and anxiety. This inversely causes fibromyalgia.
Anemia has also been said to be a cause of the disease. As women are more prone to anemia, the disease is more frequently found in women than in men. Chronic poisoning caused due to the mercury used for dental filling is another one of the speculative causes of the disease.
